Q&A WITH GFOTY

GFOTY. AKA GIRLFRIEND OF THE YEAR. AKA POLLY.

I had the pleasure of speaking with GFOTY on everything from who the boy next door really is and what’s next for GFOTY. While going over the responses it felt like I was texting a close friend or the big sister that I never had. Her humor and overall energy were contagious. I will be the first among many to say I <3 GFOTY.

GFOTY's Instagram bio states, "London's ultimate hidden gem" and honestly, I couldn't agree more.

GFOTY was one of the founders of the “genre” that we now call PC music or hyper-pop. While the actual meaning of hyper-pop is nebulous and has since been abandoned by many artists, GFOTY’s mixture of maximalist sounds pulls from across the dance music spectrum. It is done in a way that feels undeniably sincere. GFOTY is one of the most distinctive artists within the “genre” with fast beats and high-pitched vocals.

Many may argue that GFOTY’s works are ironic, I would like to state however that I don’t view them as satire whatsoever. GFOTY simply has an enigmatic blend of earnestness and humor. My favorite type of music. Her aesthetics are the blueprint for the social comment of authenticity. GFOTY shows us that nothing really matters that much and that music should be fun.

Get to know GFOTY and get a look into the eccentric and enthralling fantasy world that is GFOTY.

Q&A WITH GFOTY, THE GIRLFRIEND OF THE YEAR (AND EVERY YEAR AFTER):

GIRLONFILM:

The question that everyone wants to know... who is the boy next door in your hit Boy Next Door?

GFOTY:

The boy next door is a huge horse of a man, huge thighs, huge hair and really shiny hooves, there is a boy next door in everybody. You think the boy next door is perfect but the reality is when you get to know the boy next door, he’s most likely just a small insect, like a cricket and there’s not that much great about him. Chances are he eats tomato soup for breakfast, and that’s just weird IN MY OPINION.

GIRLONFILM:

Many categorize your sound as hyper pop; how would you define your music? What are some of your major influences when making music? What does your creative process look like?

GFOTY:

I am probably the least up-to-date with anything cool and current (unless it’s reality TV) so essentially my influences are all very dated. Think Peter Andre meets domino’s pizza, meets ‘I’m a celebrity get me out of here!’ meets the Louis Vuitton speedy bag. With that said, my creative process is whatever my main obsession is at the time. Whether that’s cooking, a new boy I fancy, or a tv show I just got in to.

GIRLONFILM:

How would you describe your artistic persona GFOTY? Are we going to see more Polly vs. GFOTY?

GFOTY:

GFOTY has taken a very long hiatus whilst Polly’s been getting ripped in the gym, there will be some cross-over there, very soon. We’re currently focusing on Chin Ups.

GIRLONFILM:

You did a boiler room set alongside DJ Spinee. What was this like?

GFOTY:

Doing anything with Spinee is fun and wonderful, she’s up there in my favourite person list, so it was great, thanks! For some reason whenever we are together something terrifying happens, like that time we were walking home one night and we literally saw a Slug hanging itself from a ceiling via a string.

GIRLONFILM:

What has making music been like as an indie artist since leaving PC Music? Is there anything you would go back and tell yourself?

GFOTY:

I would tell myself that some stuff probably does matter. I mean, I guess I always knew that. But I’m a bit too good at living in the moment and not thinking for longer than 5 seconds at a time, so maybe “try to be a bit less sporadic” and "stop saying yes before you actually think" lol - is sporadic even a word? Maybe I should start meditating.

GIRLONFILM:

What is your favorite collaboration that you’ve done? What does your dream collaboration look like?

GFOTY:

Fave collab. GOLI GUMMIES! So many delicious goli gummies I get to consume. I swear the sleep gummies actually work, like woah!
Dream collab… hmm. I guess like me and Ekin Su (from love island) could come up with something truly horrific in a kind of amazing way. There’s that great part of Love Island when she’s singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to her fake baby and she actually has quite a slamming voice.

GIRLONFILM:

You did a remix of Stupid Horse by 100 gecs. Please tell us a bit about that collaboration.

GFOTY:

Crazy Horse Collab… Was a lot of fun! Love working with Count Baldor so it’s always fun, dumb and full of stuff.

GIRLONFILM:

Do you have any further plans for GFOTY? Are there any upcoming releases planned?

GFOTY:

GFOTY is a multi-talented entity who is continually evolving. There will always be more, in what form, who knows?! I’m just currently trying to up my protein intake.

GIRLONFILM:

Finally, is there anything else you would like to include/mention within the article?

GFOTY:

IM SORRY ABOUT MY BAD PUNCTUATION AND GRAMMAR. I NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHERE TO PUT COMMAS.

GIRLONFILM:

ITS OKAY! ME EITHER! I REALLY JUST GUESS AS I GO! COMMAS REALLLLLYYYY ARENT THAT IMPORTANT ANYWAYS!

Thank you so much to GFOTY for the interview.
