I had the pleasure of interviewing the lovely singer, songwriter, and DJ Emily Tressa for Hysteria By GIRLONFILM Issue 02. AN INTERVIEW WITH EMILY TRESSA:
Q. FOR THOSE THAT ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR WORK, PLEASE TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
A. Hi!! Let me introduce myself, My name is Emily Tressa. I am a pop star, activist, businesswoman, model, and fashion student. I grew up in a small town in New Hampshire and I’ve always dreamed of moving to NYC and pursuing a career in music.
Since my early years, I’ve been involved in chorus and singing in school, nurturing my passion for vocal expression. In an unexpected turn of events during the quarantine period, I decided to release a cover of Madonna's "Hung Up" just for the fun of it. This marked my initial jump into sharing my musical talent with the world. In 2022, I released my debut single "Star Power," an electrifying blend of synth, dance, and pop that ignites the spirit of club-goers. The song encapsulates the essence of unleashing the inherent star power within oneself and fearlessly pursuing dreams. Crafting this track became a therapeutic outlet, inspiring me to cultivate confidence and resilience throughout my future career endeavors. With lyrics like "I've got star power, it's the hour," the song embodies a personal manifestation, urging me not to wait and shine brightly as the star that I am.
Q. WHAT OR WHO INSPIRES YOU WHEN YOU'RE MAKING MUSIC?
A. When it comes to my music inspirations, Madonna holds a prominent place as my greatest
influence. The nostalgic melodies from my mom's old Madonna CDs formed the soundtrack of my upbringing, and I deeply resonate with the values and messages that Madonna embodies.
Just like her, I strive to create music that moves people to dance and express themselves.
Another artist who has significantly impacted me is Lady Gaga. She played a vital role in my
journey of self-discovery and finding the confidence to embrace my true identity.
Q. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR WORK?
A. My ultimate goal is for people to feel empowered and uplifted when they experience my music or attend my shows. I want my songs to serve as a catalyst for confidence and enjoyment. While there is often a deeper meaning embedded in my lyrics that I hope resonates with listeners over time, my initial aim is for people to instinctively rise to their feet, dance, and sing along with me. When I hear a song, I want it to compel me to dance. I aspire to create that same energy for my
audience.
Q. WHO ARE A FEW OF YOUR MUSIC AND/OR FASHION INFLUENCES?
A. My huge fashion influences are Vivienne Westwood, Mugler, and Versace. These designers embody aesthetics that inspire my style every day.
Q. ASIDE FROM MUSIC, WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT?
A. One of my deepest passions revolves around advocating for trans rights, particularly in the
current climate we find ourselves in. As a transgender woman, I am personally invested in this cause, and it fills me with concern and fear to witness attempts to undermine the rights of my
fellow trans individuals in the United States. It is crucial for me to stand up and fight alongside
my trans brothers and sisters to ensure that our rights are protected and that we can live in a
society that embraces and supports our identities.
Q. DO YOU HAVE ANY UPCOMING PLANS FOR THE FUTURE/CURRENT WORKS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS?
A. This summer, I have a lineup of DJ sets and performances in the works, which will take place in the NYC area. I can't wait to bring my music to life. Additionally, I have some thrilling news to announce—my official merchandise will be launching very soon. I can’t wait to see my fans unleashing their STAR POWER while rocking my merch! Stay tuned for the release, as I can't wait to share it with everyone!
Q. WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU? WHAT DO YOU DREAM OF FOR THE FUTURE?
A. To have a doll takeover of course! Looking forward to putting out my debut album and to keep performing and meeting fans. I make music for the dolls and I will continue to do so.
